Trip to Skywalker Ranch and Skywalker Sound

This week we had the privilege of visiting one of the most highly coveted places within the motion picture industry; Skywalker Ranch. The property is a sprawling 4000 acre working ranch that houses the headquarters for Lucasfilm and Skywalker Sound.

Jim Austin, Head Engineer of Skywalker Sound was our gracious host and provided an amazing tour of the 155,000 square foot Technical Building on the property. There are six feature film dubbing stages, a 300 seat screening room and a scoring stage capable of recording a 130 piece orchestra within the Technical Building. Skywalker Ranch was built by George Lucas for filmmakers, and is one of the largest, most versatile full-service post-production facilities in the world.

The tour was incredible however, the most impressive part of the day was when we sat down in the center of the breathtaking Stag Theater for a  private viewing of a highlight reel of films mixed there. We then watched a ten minute clip of Star Trek: Into Darkness in Dolby Atmos which utilized and additional twenty speakers in the room. Movies such as ET, Titanic, Avitar, Jurassic Park, and The Avengers have been brought to life here and seeing where the sound  for some of America’s most important films come together was incredible.

Thank you Jim for your hospitality and providing a behind the scenes tour of Skywalker Ranch.
